Kono, everyone is clearing the surrounding land to start a vegetable garden. Neighbors help one another to cut and uproot trees. The whole camp is so busy. Meanwhile, I continue to go to school. Kazuo, the boy who shares my desk at school, is quiet. He is listening. We have a new teacher. Miss Mizuno was transferred to teach another class. Our class was too noisy and unmanageable, we were told by our principal. So Miss Hamma stands before us. She looks stern. The boys behave almost at once. It was as if she carried an invisible stick.

I see Japan. The snow is gone. I see the happy rice planters with their bright kimonos, their black hair tied with printed towels, the gentle wind, with lovely Mount Fuji, Fuji-san itself, in the distance. The music, our voices, go beyond our house, out into the snow, past the mountains and into space, and this special day is made more magic, and I know I shall remember it forever. 5 Our first spring 1943 March, April, how very quickly the winter months flew. Spring is here. The harsh winter winds and snow slowly leave, and the warm sun returns to the mountains and the hillsides.

What we can sell, we do for very little money. Our radio, the police came and took away. Our cousins who have acres of berry farm had to leave everything. Trucks, tractors, land, it was all taken from them. They were moved with only a few days notice to Vancouver. Strange rumors are flying. We are not supposed to own anything! The government takes our home. Mother does not know what to do now that father is not here and David too is taken. She does not speak very much; she is too worried how we are to eat with all her men gone.
