Even the currency of the term Kitchi-manito, or 'great spirit,' prior to contact is widely doubted. Neither monism nor dualism suited the Algonquian mentality, which conceived reality in terms of a multiplicity of beings with personal souls and attributes. Spirits might be helpful or harmful, friendly or hostile to humanity, but the essential fact was that they existed and had somehow to be lived with. In practice the recognition of Kitchi-manito was limited to special occasions; he was seldom mentioned io A Profusion of Spires even in connection with the paradise in the west or at the end of the Milky Way to which the Indian hoped to attain after death.
The presence of a sizeable body of white settlers attracted others. Some disillusioned loyalists moved up from New Brunswick, while others discovered belatedly the disadvantages of living under a republican government. Britain supplied a few officials and military officers, while common soldiers were brought from all parts of the United Kingdom. Groups of Highland Scots joined their loyalist compatriots in Glengarry County from time to time, and a few Lowland merchants sought their fortunes in Niagara and other centres of trade.
10 At the other end of the theological spectrum were representatives of several movements that sought in varied ways to move beyond the positions of conventional Protestantism. Some Mennonites settled in the Niagara Peninsula in 1786; " others began to locate around Waterloo in 1800 and in Markham Township in 1803. They were spiritual, and mainly lineal, descendants of the Anabaptists who in the sixteenth century had set out to reproduce literally the church life described in the New Testament.
