Winfrey was opposed to the idea, and Oprah did not at first agree to enter. She knew the competition would be fierce, with many beautiful young women vying for the title. But after mulling it over, Oprah decided she had nothing to lose and entered the contest. When Oprah stood before the judges in her evening gown, she was the only black woman among a bevy of white women with fire engine red hair. Figuring she had no chance to win, Oprah was able just to relax and to be herself during the competition.

When eight-year-old Oprah arrived in Nashville, her father was waiting for her at the station. At the time, little Oprah had no way of knowing the wonderful possibilities that awaited in her father’s stable home. Vernon and Zelma Winfrey lived in a modest house on the east side of Nashville. Winfrey was a quiet man who worked hard and held down two jobs. At the time, he was a janitor at Vanderbilt University and worked in the kitchen at a Nashville hospital. The couple was childless and more than happy to welcome Oprah into their home.

The same year, Winfrey also garnered Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Director. There was another award Winfrey was soon to earn—her college diploma.
