The Native Americans began to react more strongly to efforts at conversion. In her 1998 book A Barren Land: American Indian Dispossession and Survival, author Paula Mitchell Marks quotes the Seneca leader Red Jacket (1750–1830) as saying in 1792, “We have scarcely a place left to spread our blankets.
